A recent study in the June issue of the journal 'Psychological Science' has states that frequent Buddhist meditation can increase the attention span of a person.

Sixty people who were strong mediators and had attended several meditation retreats, were selected for the study. Researchers divided the group into half, where the first set of participants studied Buddhist meditation for three months and second group of participants were the control group of the study. Held in Colorado, participants were then giving computer tests before and after the three month meditation session, to measure their ability to make fine visual distinctions.

Results showed that there was a large improvement in attention span for the participants selected for the first group.

Spiritual Enlightenment

Spiritual Enlightenment

There's been this whole idea for ages - my uneducated guess would be that it really lifted off in the Renaissance, when the search for scientific truth became trendy - the idea that if I can't see it, it doesn't exist. Or, maybe more importantly, if I can't see how that's going to pay my bills on time, then it doesn't exist. But the ethereal world around us seems to have the most intimate and extreme, sometimes dire effects on the physical realm. I can't say I'm an old soothsayer or anything, but it seems so incredibly apparent to me, that this other side of things is everywhere and a complete part of everything that happens, and exists - yes, including myself. And if you can take this in, I also believe that it can be seen very clearly. As clearly as the wind. So what's the path to spiritual enlightenment? Well, I can tell you that it starts with the simple act of pondering that very side of things... and simple observation.

Take away the stress

Take away the stress
© Orin Zebest

Meditation is a great stress reliever and if you want to get away from the constant noise of life, meditation can do that too. If you are feeling overwhelmed or just need some time to yourself, find a quiet place where you can sit comfortably without disruption. Although many people sit on the floor when they meditate, you can sit where ever you wish. The only requirement is that it is comfortable.

When you are sitting comfortably, choose a word that you can use as a mantra. A mantra is a word that you will chant, so, chose a nice word, something that feels good and isn't too long of a word. You don't want to get tongue-tied

Now, close your eyes, think of nothing but your word, and start to say your word over and over again. Just stay focused on your mantra, if you feel yourself being pulled away by an outside distraction, focus more on your mantra. Nobody can tell you how to chant, it is up to you. You can sing your word. You can say your word very slowly. You can say your word loudly. It doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is that you focus on chanting your word.

Before too long you will feel naturally ready to stop. Just sit quietly for a few moments and feel the energy within.

Now you are ready to go back into the world feeling lighter and more able to cope.
